Join us on Thursdays during fall, winter, and spring terms for a diverse program of concerts featuring students, faculty, and special guests. The Noon Concert Series is a weekly opportunity to experience the sounds of the PSU School of Music & Theater. This concert features compositions by Baden Powell, Vinicius de Moraes, Pixinguinha, Djavan, Milton Nascimento, Antonio Carlos Jobim, originals by Vianna, and more. Together they have recorded and performed a variety of Brazilian, Jazz, and contemporary music for over a decade. ![]() Their work blends bossa-nova, samba and baião in a jazzistic style. The Sherry Alves Brazilian Quartet features Brazilian musicians Cassio Vianna and Wagner Trindade, collaborating with Oregon natives Sherry Alves and Jason Palmer. Some collaborate with computers to make their weavings others weave by hand, but use data or internet memes as a basis for woven patterns. Some use data analysis, while others use metaphor. The artists in this exhibition investigate the complex relationship between weaving and computing. This same habit of erasure now plays out in high tech’s origin myths and frequent failure to cultivate inclusivity in education, hiring, and product design. Historically, narratives of industrialization have minimized the contributions of women, low-wage laborers, and people of color. High technology’s roots in the Industrial Revolution may explain some of the biases and challenges currently facing the industry. One element was the punch card, which remained a primary medium for programming and inputting data to computers into the 1980s. ![]() Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine (1834), the blueprint for modern computing and algorithms, borrowed elements of its design from the Jacquard loom. The Jacquard weaving process, first demonstrated in 1801, gave instructions to a loom using holes punched in paper cards-an early form of binary code. He debuted at Carnegie Hall in 2013 with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra as the Brother in Kurt Weill’s The Seven Deadly Sins. Heralded by the New York Times as an “ardent tenor,” Carlton Moe has been thrilling audiences at the Majestic Theater on Broadway in The Phantom of the Opera as Ubaldo Piangi since 2016.
